California Information Technology
The California Department of Technology is committed to partnering with state entities to deliver digital services, developing innovative and responsive solutions to business needs, and providing quality assurance for state government Information Technology (IT) projects and services.
Role/Responsibility and Authority
The California Department of Technology (CDT) is the state’s central IT organization and has broad responsibility and authority over all aspects of technology in California state government, including: policy formation, interagency coordination, IT project oversight, information security, technology service delivery, and advocacy. The Director of the CDT, who also serves as the State Chief Information Officer (CIO), advises the Governor on the strategic management and direction of the state’s IT resources.
CDT is also responsible for establishing, maintaining and overseeing the implementation of the state’s IT strategic plan, policies, standards, procedures and enterprise architecture. Additionally, the Department is accountable for approving and overseeing IT projects throughout their lifecycle (e.g., planning, budgeting, procurement and execution) and providing information security guidance to secure the state’s information assets.
Further, as the home of the State Data Center, CDT is responsible for providing IT infrastructure services to state entities for their public facing and mission critical systems and offers a myriad of cloud and on premise services to meet the needs of state and local governmental entities. The Department also employs a strategic focus on innovation, enterprise, and workforce development solutions to expand the state’s operational capacity and provide the agility and scalability necessary to keep pace with the ever-changing demands of doing business.
Ensuring the security of the state’s sensitive information assets, fostering innovation and partnerships across industry and government, establishing and delivering successful IT projects, and providing sustainable and effective digital services are core initiatives the Department is leading to deliver better government for the people of California.
